How Should Christians Relate to Culture and Society?
Many Christians would agree that the church should be focused on proclaiming the gospel, caring for the needs of the community, interceding in prayer, worshipping God, and so on. But should the church also engage the society at large? Should the church be involved in advocating for certain legislation or opposing certain practices? Can the church transform culture, or is culture more often transforming the church? If we do become involved, should we address a wide array of issues or should we limit our involvement to exceptional circumstances? How should we engage others? What methods should we utilize, and which ones do more harm than good? Can a case be made for those Christians groups that opt to “withdraw” from culture altogether? How has the church been impacted by secularization and pluralism, and how have Christians furthered the transition to a secular culture? If it is true we live in a “post-Christian” world, are there any opportunities left for Christians to impact the culture around them?
